Letter to our local political representative to express objection to vaccine passports

How NOT to start your novel: Six First Page No-Nos

This was sent recently. You, dear reader, are more than welcome to borrow any part of it and send your own letter to your local political rep. They are, after all, supposed to be working for you, and need to hear your views.

I wrote this on behalf of myself and housemate, who agrees with it, so it refers to “we.” We are Canadians, so we refer to provinces and a Prime Minster but the same arguments apply to anywhere in the world where Covid restrictions are being imposed.

Attn: _______________

Dear _______________

The recent announcement that the government would endorse vaccine passports is worrisome. We are writing in opposition to it.

We have already suffered a unconstitutional and unnecessary lockdown here. This was entirely out of proportion to the public health risk from Covid-19.

We hope and pray your government will not go down the path of vaccine passports or further lockdowns. Both are a violation of our civil rights and do not belong to a free society.

People should have the right to medical privacy and informed consent when it comes to medical decisions — especially when it comes to a drug for which the long terms effects are still unknown.

Such harsh measures are dehumanizing and remind us of the totalitarian state in the former Soviet Union (which we’ve both seen in person).

There is epidemiological evidence to suggest that lockdowns do far more harm than good, and are not especially effective at mitigating the spread of this particular communicable disease. [1]

That’s because the incidence of its asymptomatic transmission is quite low, a fact acknowledged by Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the WHO Emerging Diseases Unit, who admitted that asymptomatic transmission is “very rare. [2]

The dictatorial decision-making that results in a lockdowns is unbearable and completely antithetical to the ideals of a free society.

Our ancestors fought and died in past wars to protect our freedoms. These include the freedoms of assembly, speech, religion, and the press.

Such freedoms should also include privacy from intrusion by the state, e.g., medical privacy, and the medical freedom of informed consent as guaranteed by the Nuremberg Code

That piece of international law, drafted after WWII, guarantees the inalienable right to refuse to be experimented on without prior informed consent). Stay-at-home orders, mask mandates, and vaccine mandates are all experimental.

This government was quite willing to dispense with the basic freedoms that previous generations had fought and died for. This went went too far.

Looking at the seriousness of the lockdown and anti-lockdown protests in Australia right now, we are afraid that our society could well go down that path of increasing state authoritarianism and unrest.

There is only so much imposed dictatorship that people can take before fighting back.

A disease with a 94% to 99% recovery rate (depending on age group)[3] and for which asymptomatic transmission is almost nil) simply does not warrant this incredible global over-reaction by the media and by lawmakers.

It has been termed an example of mass hysteria, and not wrongly so.[4]

Surely, some common sense must prevail before we lose everything that makes our society worth living in and fighting for?!

Further lockdowns should not be permitted under any circumstances.

We do not know the full extent of the damage they did last time, due to lack of access to medical facilities, job losses, business closings, depression, and suicide. We only know of the damage to lives we saw among friends and acquaintances.

A Statistics Canada report said that of people under 65, four times more died from “indirect consequences” of the lockdown than of Covid-19, due to “substance use and misuse, including unintentional (accidental) poisonings and diseases and conditions related to alcohol consumption.”[5]

In other words, people were depressed at losing their jobs, their businesses, and their freedoms, and as a consequence turned to substance abuse.

Lockdowns literally destroyed lives, and yet they were continued recklessly by this administration.

Nicholas Wansbutter, a Canadian criminal defense lawyer, says that vaccine passports constitute assault, invalid consent, and are in violation of sections 6, 7 & 15 of our Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.[6]

In New York City, restaurant owners are now suing the municipal government for imposing a vaccine passport system there, saying it will cost them business.[7]

If a vaccine passport system were to be imposed here, we hope business owners here would do the same. Let us hope it never gets to that point.

As Christians, we’re also in principle opposed to drugs that were tested on fetal cell linings, as all of the Covid-19 vaccines were.

Our faith requires us to live in a way consistent with a pro-life position;
taking drugs tested in this way is thus advised against by numerous Christian authorities across several denominations. [8]

As people committed to the church, we were offended by the violation of freedom of religion that the lockdowns imposed.

Churches were wrongly deemed “non-essential” — as well as many small
businesses –despite complying with Covid regulations. And yet box-stores remained open, often full of people.

Wal-Mart made record profits while small businesses closed and churches lost donations (and some just shut down altogether, never to re-open).

This distinction between “essential” and “non-essential” was arbitrarily imposed and horribly discriminatory.

In terms of church, it completely ignored the importance of communal rituals and fellowship for religious practitioners, not all of whom had the technological means or ability to participate in the disembodied “zoom” services.

And it ignored the degree to which church life is essential to many of the faithful. "Man shall not live on bread alone" Jesus said, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.(Mt 4:4).

And Hebrews 10:25 tells us to "not forsake the assembly."

Frankly, the disdain that the government demonstrated for churches during the lockdowns reminded us of the long history of persecution of Christians by state authorities, starting with Roman authorities and more recently in China and North Korea.

Of course, Christians here are not nearly as persecuted as in those situations, but it is alarming to see the growth of violent anti-Christian prejudice in Canada

This prejudice, which the Prime Minister did much to promote, resulted in the spate of recent church arsons and a lack of condemnation of it by the Prime Minister`s office. In fact his office actually said the arson was “understandable"!

We see the designation of churches as non-essential“ and stiff fines against those who met for worship despite the lockdown, as emblematic of a wider pattern of bias against traditional faith by secular Leftists.

When that disdain is shared by state authorities, that is alarming.

Despite the fact that churches have been shut down, we witnessed a rally for Black Lives Matter permitted, with 4,000 people in in our city last summer.

The hypocrisy of this poor decision-making, which punished freedom of speech and churches, but rewarded a violent Marxist organization, made us – and many others – lose faith in the government (at all levels).

We also grew to distrust the mainstream media, which seemed to be more purveyors of fear-mongering propaganda than actual news — especially the CBC, which should be defunded.

It is like listening to Pravda, giving only the state`s version of things and not the whole picture – especially when it comes to science.

We do, however, appreciate the good work of MP Derek Sloane in bringing attention to wrongly censored physicians and scientists who have raised critical questions regarding the suppression of low- cost alternative treatments, the wisdom of the lockdowns, and the safety of the Covid vaccines.[9]

Our Premier did not seem to base his decision to impose a lockdown on anything that could be called scientific consensus, since it does not and cannot exist with such a new disease and a ‘vaccine’ that has not been fully tested.

Those who legitimately sought scientific debate were censored, which is not how legitimate science works.

Dr. Stanislav Grof wrote that “science in the true sense of the word is open to unbiased investigation of any existing phenomena.”

It is necessarily falsifiable, open to objection, never fixed. Instead, what we’ve witnessed since early 2020 is the rise of what`s called "scientism" and the misuse of medical authority for commercial and political interests, to the detriment of humanity.

In March 2020, Dr. Fauci exaggerated the danger of COVID-19, saying that its mortality rate would be ten times higher than the mortality rate of seasonal influenza. Dr. Tam, in Canada, did roughly the same.

This turned out to be false, but it caused a panic that gave state actors license to implement lockdowns that in the final analysis killed far more people than Covid-19.

Nor can we attribute a lower death count to lockdowns: their efficacy has never been scientifically established. It has been contested by some epidemiologists, in fact.

What seems to have happened is that commercial and political interests converged: pharmaceutical companies stood to gain billions of dollars from the new vaccines and some provincial and federal leaders wanted greater authority over the populaces they governed and saw an opportunity to seize it.

It may have also been the case that the politicians in question had good intentions but were led to impose lockdowns and mask mandates by the media and public alarm it generated, and by deference to state medical authorities. But this kind of authority can be dangerous.

Physicist Paul Feyerabend said that “science must be protected from ideologies; and societies, especially democratic societies, must be protected from science.”

He wrote that “in a democracy, scientific institutions, research programs, and suggestions must therefore be subjected to public control, there must be a separation of state and science just as there is a separation between state and religious institutions, and science should be taught as one view among many and not as the one and only road to truth and reality.”

Just as the state and religion once conspired to work together in ways now regarded by many as despotic, medical and state actors are now working together to exercise power over populations in ways that must be questioned by people of good conscience.

No doubt many of them have good intentions, but the effect of these restrictions has been, on the whole, detrimental to the societies they governed.

To allow the government to have absolute power over its citizens is very dangerous.

Montesquieu, whose ideas helped establish the separation of powers underpinning the constitutions used in the Western world, said, “there is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice.

Which is a way of saying that although we need the state, to govern, its powers must be limited so as not to become despotic.

Prime Minister Trudeau’s administration has done more to harm Canada than can be fully expressed in this letter, so his enthusiastic endorsement of authoritarian lockdowns (and the Great Reset` he believes it promises) was unsurprising.

It would seem that Mr. Trudeau wants for himself the “the basic dictatorship" that he envies China for.

We were disappointed with the performance of Conservative Premier Doug Ford in Ontario, who has done much to harm Ontario’s citizens with tyrannical lockdowns.

Ford seems to have abandoned traditionally conservative principles when it comes to protecting human freedoms against government over-reach.

The measures we saw implemented in 2020 traded away basic rights and freedoms for an illusion of safety.

We find that these days citizens are not being allowed to have a reasonable and open public debate over these important issues, due to increasing mainstream media and social media censorship.

Our comments, which are quite reasonable and civil, have been frequently (and wrongly) censored on the comments section of the local newspaper.

This censorship is emblematic of a trend in our society towards authoritarian Leftism, which frankly we find quite alarming.

To help prevent lockdowns from happening again, we appeal to you, our elected representative, to bring some common sense back to this province.

We hope, trust and pray that in your new office you will advocate on behalf of your constituents who believe that a free society is worth defending.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Does it Violate Religious Liberty to Close Churches over ...

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity ... the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This immaturity is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the [European] Enlightenment. "Laziness and cowardice are the reasons why such a large part of mankind gladly remain minors all their lives, long after nature has freed them from external guidance. They are the reasons why it is so easy for others to set themselves up as guardians. It is so comfortable to be a minor. If I have a book that thinks for me, a pastor who acts as my conscience, a physician who prescribes my diet [or vaccine], and so on--then I have no need to exert myself. I have no need to think, if only I can pay; others will take care of that disagreeable business for me. Those guardians who have kindly taken supervision upon themselves see to it that the overwhelming majority of mankind ... should consider the step to maturity, not only as hard, but as extremely dangerous. First, these guardians make their domestic cattle stupid and carefully prevent the docile creatures from taking a single step without the leading-strings to which they have fastened them. Then they show them the danger that would threaten them if they should try to walk by themselves. Now this danger is really not very great; after stumbling a few times they would, at last, learn to walk. However, examples of such failures intimidate and generally discourage all further attempts. "Thus it is very difficult for the individual to work himself out of the immaturity which has become almost second nature to him. He has even grown to like it, and is at first really incapable of using his own understanding because he has never been permitted to try it. Dogmas and formulas [e.g., Leftist ideology, identity politics] these mechanical tools designed for reasonable use--or rather abuse--of his natural gifts, are the fetters of an everlasting immaturity. The man who casts them off would make an uncertain leap over the narrowest ditch, because he is not used to such free movement. That is why there are only a few men who walk firmly, and who have emerged from immaturity by cultivating their own minds." - Kant, "An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment"
